Frequently asked questions about pricing

We understand that legal fees can feel opaque. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often from prospective clients considering our real-estate law services.

Disbursements are third-party costs that we pay on your behalf during the transaction. Common examples include land registry search fees (typically $50–$150), title insurance premiums ($250–$400 for residential properties), courier charges, and government registration fees. Every disbursement is itemised on your closing statement so you know exactly where each dollar went.

For residential transactions, our fees are typically collected from the proceeds of sale at closing, so you do not need to pay out of pocket in advance. For commercial matters or litigation files, we can arrange a payment schedule tailored to the timeline of your matter. Please discuss this with your lawyer during the initial consultation.

No. We provide a written fee agreement before commencing any work. If unexpected complexities arise — for example, a title defect that requires additional searches — we will notify you of any additional cost before incurring it. You will never receive a surprise invoice from our office.

If a residential purchase or sale does not close for reasons beyond your control (e.g., financing falls through or conditions are not met), we charge only for the work completed to that point. In most cases, this is significantly less than the full flat fee. We will provide an itemised account of time spent.

Your first consultation — whether by phone, video call, or in person at our Laval office — is complimentary. This gives us the opportunity to understand your needs, and gives you the chance to evaluate whether our firm is the right fit before making any commitment.
